Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and probably the world and is enriched with a tradition and an ambience which is hard to equal. The Club is situated at the foot of Mount Piduruthalagala (Mount Pedro) and is surrounded by some of the finest tea gardens in Sri Lanka. The 18-hole course which has a length of 6075 yards and a course par of 71 consists of fairways which are long and narrow, bordered by tall trees and dense shrubbery. Good positional play is required, and the terrain enfolds the golfer in a constant uphill and downhill trek with many water hazards.

History
The ‘Times’ reported that the festivities in Nuwara Eliya started in mid-February, and gave detailed descriptions of the ‘br lliant parties’, Lady Ridgeway’s ‘At Homes’, the Race Meets and other sporting events. Among the social activities that took place at the time were a Regatta. and the formation of a new Hunt Club. Also reported was a Ladies Cricket Match — the Nuwara Eliya Amazons versus the Dickoya Fillies – “The gaieties end mid-May”. Of further interest is that in 1898, McLaren’s (the Store that gave its name to the green on which the first four holes of the Golf Club were laid) was sold to Cargills. In 1899, the Club had a Membership of about 190, and J. N. Campbell was re-elected Captain. For the first time, an Army Officer, Colonel Quill, succeeded in winning the championship.

The clubhouse & bar is an atmospheric place to enjoy a drink and meal after your round. It is full of character and colonial history. Little has changed since the founding of the club and you can even enjoy a log fire on cooler evenings.
